He still calls me Mama | Indianapolis Family Photographer
Last Tuesday, we had the nicest day we have had since possibly…October? On that extremely rare, warm and beautiful sun-shining day, I registered my youngest son Colton up for kindergarten. My baby will be going to kindergarten next year. My baby.
To everyone’s surprise, I managed to hold myself together pretty well. Later that evening, we got home from our first T-Ball team meeting of the season and the sun was still beaming bright, but starting to set. I grabbed Colton and my camera and we headed to my favorite dirty little spot down the road from our house, perfect for pictures. We spent literally five minutes roaming but it felt like an entire day, the world stopping just for us. I got goose bumps watching him hop into piles of leaves and climb through tall weeds. My eyes filled with tears as I listened to him talk to me. He would say something and I would replay it over in my head trying to remember his cute little voice and the way he has his own little accent. I want to remember this voice forever… the voice that still calls me Mama. Yes, Mama, because I don’t have the heart to tell him he is too big to be calling me Mama. Throw in his accent that makes him sound like he is from Boston – everyone cracks up about it – and it doesn’t sound so babyish really… But to him I am still Mama.
Once he stops calling me Mama, I probably won’t hear it ever again…and the thought of that is harder than I ever imagined it would be. So for those five minutes I watched him play and giggle and jump and roar like a dinosaur. I tried not to worry about the future and soaked it all in. For now he still wants to hold my hand. He still asks me to help zip up his jacket. He still pouts on his way to preschool saying he is going to miss me, but the same little boy is so excited to tell me about how great his day was when I pick him up. He loves to help me cook dinner and still needs a stool to reach. He still grumbles when he has to clean his room, but the enthusiasm when he is done is so awesome. He even still climbs into my bed every night like a secret ninja, and I don’t kick him out. I am his Mama and he is my baby. Tell me, when did he get so big??
